Dogs love treats – who doesn’t? Not only are treats delicious, but they make an excellent reward when your dog does something you like. Instead of buying expensive treats filled with mystery ingredients, call the kids into the kitchen and spend some quality time together making your own. These homemade salmon treats for dogs are SO easy to make – and they only have 3 ingredients. Most of the steps are so simple that kids of all ages will love to help you make them!
Homemade Salmon Treats for Dogs
Ingredients:
3 cans of salmon (with bones and liquid included)*
2 eggs
1 cup tapioca flour
*You can also use whole sardines in water or tuna, which contains no bones or skin.
Directions:
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees
- Use a can opener to open the cans of salmon
Call the Kids:
- Put each silicone mold onto a separate baking sheet.
- Pour the salmon and the liquid from the can into the blender
- Crack the eggs and pour them into the blender.
- Compost the shells (If you are using tinned meat with no bones/skin, you can include the shells in this recipe! They add minerals for your pooch.)
- Measure the tapioca flour and pour it into the blender
- Put the lid on firmly (have an adult check it)
- Press the power button and blend the contents of the blender until very smooth.
- Help an adult pour the liquid into the silicone molds. Pour approximately half of the liquid onto each mold.
- Use a spatula to spread it out.
Have an adult put the trays into the oven. Bake for 40 minutes or until the treats are dry and crunchy. Once the silicone molds are cool, call the kids to turn them over onto the baking sheet. Store these dog treats in a zip top bag in your freezer and remove what you need daily. (They contain no preservatives, so they will spoil at room temperature.)
Cooking the Dog Treats
Here is what the dog treats will look like when they come out of the oven.
When you dump them out of the mold, you will see that they are in really neat little pyramid shapes!
Simply pour the cooked dog treats into a zip top bag and store them in the freezer, where they will keep for what feels like forever…or at least until your pooch finishes them! These are great for training games or for rewarding your dog for being polite with your family.
